The Feel Before the Feeling
Okay, so early Fall 2008 I received an invitation to show at a small print shop/gallery in Portland called Pushdot Studio, which is also where I’ve made the bulk of my prints in recent years. I had a three month window to make new work, and this here is the result.
I’m sure I had some sort of conceptual framework for these images at some point, but for me that noise tends to fade once the panic sets in. In the post-game analysis, I’m pretty sure I was simply trying to amplify the intensity of the last series. I knew this was going to be my last shot at making paintings for a while (the itch to work in other mediums was starting to overwhelm me), so I really wanted to go nuts with this one. How disorienting could these images get? How emphatically could I state my case for the kind of images I favor (chaotic, sex-obsessed, spiritually conflicted)?
Below is what came out of the last three months of 2008. The show itself was fun, although it confirmed a number of lingering doubts I’d been having about showing work in the gallery context (more on this later). I hope you like these guys…
